I PFAS sono composti chimici utilizzati per la loro capacità di rendere i prodotti impermeabili all’acqua e ai grassi.
A partire dagli anni ’50, l’utilizzo più noto di questi composti sono stati impiegati nell’utilizzo delle pentole antiaderenti, tessuti antipioggia, schiume per estintori e carta da cucina.
Oggi queste sostanze sono conosciute per la contaminazione ambientale, che le rendono resistenti ai processi di degradazione esistenti in natura e persistono anche negli organismi viventi, compreso l’uomo, dove risultano essere tossici ad alte concentrazioni.
È stato dimostrato, infatti, che PFOA e PFOS sono in grado di causare un’ampia gamma di effetti avversi e questo desta ancor più preoccupazione considerando la loro proprietà di accumularsi nell’organismo; motivo per cui sono stati ribattezzati ” forever chemicals”, – sostanze chimiche eterne.
In molti comuni sono già stati trovati negli alimenti, nell’acqua potabile e nel sangue delle persone associata a una serie di effetti negativi sulla salute, e al sistema immunitario.
